We have mixed emotions when we read Paul's letter to the Thessalonians! Some of his remarks cause us to say to ourselves…"We feel the same way, Paul!" Let me share a few.
- 1 Thess. 2:17 "when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought)"That is often how we feel after we have visited a leader's meeting, class and had a briefing time with the staff of our classes. We are torn away because we need to move on to another class. We leave them with challenges, opposition, opportunities, and encouragement …they are on our hearts, in our prayers and in our conversation with each another.
- Paul says in 1Thess. 3:1 "When we could stand it no longer, we…sent Timothy!"For us it is this…when we can stand it no longer we try to SKYPE, or Email. Often our emails are returned "nondeliverable" or our SKYPE calls are garbled. So we wait and trust God!
- Again Paul's words ring true in our heart…1 Thess. 3:10, 11. "Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again…Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus Christ clear the way for us to come to you." That is where we are now as we plan our second semester visits to our classes and prayer groups.
But remember I said we have mixed emotions. "Oh my!” Paul was quite a prayer warrior. Do you ever feel inadequate when you read about those great saints like Abraham, Moses and Paul? We do! But God knows just how to lift us out of the "pity pit." I picked up a prayer I had read and underlined in 2001 (our first year in Zimbabwe) and it said this, "I pray that such examples will inspire me to intercede more fervently for others rather than bring discouragement. Grant me visible answers to specific prayers for others so I can be encouraged to continue interceding for other people and for the spread of your work on earth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” (The Believer’s Secret of Intercession compiled from the writings of Andrew Murray & C.H. Spurgeon y Louis Gifford Parkhurst, Jr.)
What a precious, personal encourager God is! Off we go to pray!
