Gifts of Appreciated Securities

Giving stock or other appreciated securities can generate a charitable deduction.

Donors receive a charitable deduction for the fair market value of gifted securities (that you have held for more than one year), no matter what you originally paid for them. The donor will pay no capital gains tax on the securities gifted. Consult your tax advisor for application of these laws to your personal tax situation.

Gifts of Stock or Mutual Fund Shares

Most securities transfers are handled electronically from your brokerage account directly to ours. If you need to gift securities in certificate form, please contact the finance division of Bible Study Fellowship at donorcare@bsfinternational.org for further instructions.

Below is the information to provide to your brokerage firm to initiate an electronic transfer of shares:

Clearing Firm:

Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette/Pershing Division

A receipt acknowledging your gift will be issued after receiving your letter and the transferred securities.

Gifts of Other Appreciated Assets

The tax benefits of giving appreciated assets are not limited to stock. You can also give other appreciated assets such as:

  • Mutual funds

  • Bonds

  • Real estate

  • Business interests

  • Private C-Corp stock

  • S-Corp stock

  • FLP or LLC shares

  • Mineral rights

  • Gold and silver

If you’re thinking of selling any appreciated assets and you want to give back to the Lord through BSF, our Legacy or Planned Gift partners can assist you in developing the best plan of stewardship for your gift.

Gift Through IRAs

A qualified IRA charitable distribution can benefit you and BSF.

If you are age 70½ or older, you can make gifts directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to BSF without paying income tax on the withdrawal.

  • You must be age 70½ or older at the time the gift is made.

  • You must request from your IRA plan custodian a direct transfer of funds to BSF Global Impact Corp. for the gift to be tax-free.

  • Gifts can be any amount up to $100,000 each year and can also be used to satisfy your IRA-required minimum distributions.

Funds held in other types of retirement plans do not qualify but may be rolled over into an IRA, then used to make tax-free gifts to BSF. (This IRA Charitable Rollover provision was extended permanently by Congress in December 2015.)

It is important to know:

  • IRA gifts are not deducted on your federal tax return. Instead, you simply avoid paying federal income tax on the required distribution because it is not included in your income.

  • You may be able to make rollover transfers from your 403(b), 401(k) or other retirement plans to your IRA, then make gifts through your IRA.

  • Whether IRA gifts are a good plan of stewardship based on your circumstances.

You will want to verify whether or not your state income tax is also avoided.

You also may designate BSF as a beneficiary of part or all of your IRA. The following information should be used to name BSF as a beneficiary of your IRA:

Name: Bible Study Fellowship

Offices: PO Box 675241, Dallas, TX 75267-5241

Federal Tax ID Number: 94-1514010

If you or your financial advisor has questions about giving through your IRA, please contact donorcare@bsfinternational.org

If you are looking for a financial advisor, our Legacy or Planned Giving partners can assist you in navigating these rules to increase your stewardship over your gifts to BSF.

Gifts Through Donor Advised Funds

You can generate a charitable deduction now and then distribute gifts to BSF over time.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is one of the most beneficial and fastest growing means of charitable giving today, offering immediate tax advantages, simplified record-keeping, and flexibility in choosing beneficiaries and investment options.

A DAF simply works like a charitable savings account. You can fund your account with many different types of assets (such as cash, stocks, and real estate) and receive an immediate tax deduction at the time your account is funded. Once established, you have the freedom to decide which ministries you’d like to give to and when. Because the assets are invested, your account can grow over time, allowing you to give even more to BSF.

DAFs are easy to set up with a simple application. There are no complicated legal documents to fill out. Once established, DAFs are easy to manage. You are able to manage your fund online, if you choose. There are no application fees to set up a DAF and minimal administration fees to maintain your account. As with gifts of appreciated assets (such as stocks, other securities, and real estate) directly to charities, you receive a deduction for the fair market value and avoid the tax on the capital gain.

Our Legacy or Planned Gift partners will assist you in establishing and managing your DAF and giving to BSF.
